COVID-19 Pandemic has Something to Tell us and We should be Listening

Coronavirus has spread all over the world. Hundreds of thousands of people have been affected by the virus and many have died. And this is definitely not a good news. People all over the world are in fear and it’s negatively affecting everyone both physically and mentally. Homeless people and those depending upon daily wages are struggling to live. And this is something many of us could not even imagine. It has turned out deadlier than a world war. However, every tragedy has a positive side. Of course the world is witnessing less pollution because of less activities all around the globe. But not all humans are as considerate and aware about nature as they should have been. I’m talking about the change this global pandemic is capable of bringing in people’s perceptions about themselves and others, especially in terms of occupation and social status. This crisis may change the way people all over the world treat each other.

All humans are equal. Discrimination in the name of race, class, occupation etc. has no validity. Nevertheless, in many situations we tend to think we are better or superior to others in one or the other way. If we are earning a good amount of money, we tend to look down upon those who live on minimum wages. If we have a corporate job, we happen to think that we are superior to those who do manual work. In such a manner, we discriminate against people a lot of the time. So, personally I have this feeling that this epidemic is here to remind us of our true status.

We should be respecting people from all sectors. And the most obvious sector now is the health sector. Doctors and nurses are working relentlessly, and it’s because of them that most of us are safe at home. There’s no doubt that we must respect them and appreciate their effort. Another group of people are the military force and the police. They are working day and night to make sure everyone is safe. If they do not take their duties seriously, we all are going to get into trouble. And we shouldn’t ignore the fact that a right decision should be taken by the political leaders in this kind of situation. So, we should be thankful to those making such important decisions. Journalists and reporters are always there to provide us with the necessary information and updates. Without their effort, decisions taken by the leaders would have no effect or result. Many hospitals have been built throughout the world during this outbreak. And without the availability of engineers, technicians and builders in such a panicking time, it wouldn’t be possible for doctors and nurses to treat so many patients in isolated wards. So, we have no reason to think that only certain people are important and necessary for a society. And I think that the underdog in this situation is the industry of art and entertainment. Many people think artists are useless and they don’t have any contribution to the world. However, during this crisis, millions if not billions of people are surviving just because of art and entertainment. For some of the usually busy people, staying at home is one of the most difficult things to do. And in such a situation, movies, series, funny videos, books, songs, dance performances, talent shows and many other genres of art are what people at home are resorting to. If people staying at home had nothing to read, watch and listen to, maybe half of the affected population would die of stress, depression and frustration. So, there’s no reason why we should be arrogant about ourselves. I really wish people would listen to this message and try their best to become humble towards others and be grateful to everyone around them.
